They were sent to a mission to rescue people from the Skrulls, the alien Shapeshifters they fighting against Kree. During this mission, Vers got captured by Skrull Commander Talos.

Vers than escapes from the Skrulls and crash lands on earth in Los Angeles. S.H.I.E.L.D agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson takes interest on her and investigates the crash.
